Nat Finkelstein (USA)

About

Nat Finkelstein was born on January 16th 1933 in Coney Island, New York and died on October 2nd 2009.

Throughout the 1960s, he was a successful mainstream photojournalist, reporting on emerging political and cultural movements in New York City.

In 1964, he entered Andy Warhol’s ‘Factory’ as a journalist and remained there for three years (1964-1967) during which time he recorded the activities of such luminaries as Duchamp, Dylan, Sedgwick, Dali, Ginsberg, the Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol himself.

In 2001, Nat exhibited his photographs with us as part of the launch of Chris Sullivan and Steve Colegrave’s book ‘A Punk Anthology’ (See Exhibitions Section / The Launch of a Punk Anthology).

When the show finished, we acquired a number of Nat’s images from his Factory residency, depicting Edie Sedgwick, Nico and the Velvet Underground.

The photographs form part of a series called ‘Five Factory Photographs’ which Nat and Eric Schneyderberg of Aeric in the Netherlands produced together in 2001.
